Cockroach Janta Party: From Meme to Movement

A Chief Justice called India's unemployed youth "cockroaches." Six weeks later, 22 million of them are organised, on the streets, and refusing to leave Jantar Mantar until the Education Minister resigns. The protest is now on Day 10 — and the stakes have never been higher.

🔴 Live Update — June 29, 2026 · Day 10
Sonam Wangchuk's hunger strike enters Day 2 at Jantar Mantar. Delhi Police has cut off sanitation facilities at the protest site. Around 500 farmers from UP, Haryana & Punjab were placed under house arrest overnight to prevent them from joining. Opposition's NCP (SP) has formally joined the sit-in. Government remains silent.
📰 June 29, 2026 — What Happened Today

Wangchuk hunger strike enters Day 2. He continues his indefinite fast at Jantar Mantar. Before starting yesterday, he and Dipke visited Rajghat to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. The protest began with a two-minute silence.

Delhi Police cuts off sanitation at site. Dipke alleged on social media that police disconnected water and hygiene facilities. "No water connection and hygiene measures," he said, adding that despite requests citing Wangchuk's age and health, police was "not cooperating."

~500 farmers placed under house arrest. Dipke claimed that farmers from Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab were detained overnight to prevent them from reaching Jantar Mantar.

First opposition party formally joins. NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) national spokesperson Anish Gawande joined the sit-in — the first opposition representative to do so. "This is my ideology," he said, and reiterated the demand for Pradhan's resignation.

Khap leaders join the protest. Khap leader Atar Singh Khadyan addressed the gathering: "Has youth ever stopped? Can you stop without winning this battle? This government bowed down after taking lives of 750 farmers."

New grievances surface. The family of Amaira, a Class 6 student who died in an alleged suicide at Neerja Modi School in Jaipur in 2025, joined the agitation seeking justice — showing the protest has become a broader platform for accountability.

How It All Started

On May 15, 2026, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant made a remark in court that would unintentionally ignite the largest youth protest India has seen in years. He compared certain activists and unemployed young people to "cockroaches" and "parasites of society." The comment spread instantly — and the reaction was explosive.

Rather than simply express outrage, 30-year-old political communications strategist Abhijeet Dipke flipped the insult entirely. He launched the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on May 16, 2026 — a satirical movement whose tagline reads: "Voice of the Lazy & Unemployed." Dipke used AI tools including Claude and ChatGPT to build its website and manifesto.

"This is my Swadesh moment. The only message I want to give to the youth of this country is that it is time to come out and join us." — Abhijeet Dipke, CJP Founder, June 28, 2026

Within 78 hours of launch, CJP's Instagram crossed 3 million followers. In under five days, it passed 10 million — overtaking the BJP's official handle. Today it stands at over 22 million, with more than 3.5 lakh registered members nationwide.

Why Is India's Youth So Angry?

The CJP is not just about one remark. It has become a channel for a generation — the largest Gen Z population in the world — who feel systematically failed by the state. With young people making up more than a quarter of India's population but facing limited job opportunities, the movement has tapped into a deep well of disillusionment with traditional politics.

What the Government Says

The establishment's response to the now 10-day-old protest has been one of silence and suppression. Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has called the CJP the "B-team of terror groups." PM Modi has not addressed any of the movement's demands. On June 27 — Pradhan's birthday — Modi publicly praised the minister's work on the National Education Policy, in what many saw as a deliberate counter-signal to the thousands sitting at Jantar Mantar.

On June 29, Delhi Police escalated pressure further by cutting off sanitation facilities at the protest site and placing approximately 500 supporting farmers under house arrest across three states. The Supreme Court had earlier dismissed a petition seeking CBI investigation into the CJP. MeitY's attempt to block CJP on X only backfired — the party returned within minutes under a new handle.

"A government that never listens to its people may be cruel, but that is never an achievement in a democracy." — Sonam Wangchuk, Jantar Mantar, June 28, 2026

CJP's Core Demands

📣 Official Demands
  • Resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan as Union Education Minister over the NEET 2026 paper leak.
  • ₹1 crore compensation to families of every student who died by suicide following exam cancellations.
  • Education & Exam Reforms — transparent administration, end to paper leaks, accountability at NTA, fix CBSE on-screen marking.
  • Right to Employment Law — guaranteed jobs or unemployment allowances for citizens aged 21 to 60.

What Makes This Movement Different?

Political analysts draw parallels between CJP and youth movements in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal — where social-media-born protests toppled governments. The group's rise echoes a similar trend across South Asia, where youth movements born out of social media have been crucial in antigovernment protests. What sets CJP apart is its self-aware, satirical identity — weaponising humour as a political tool, making it far harder for the establishment to delegitimise.

The movement has also broadened far beyond its original base. With farmers, opposition politicians, khap leaders and student families all now joining the protest, CJP has transformed from a Gen Z meme movement into a cross-section coalition of Indian civil society.
